A zippo lighter is a metal lighter manufacturated by Zippo Manufacturing Company in Pennsylvannia. They have thousands of trendy designs that have been made in the last 70 years since their introduction. Zippo lighters are a collectable item which have gained the popularity of "windproof". Zippo lighters are able to stay lit in harsh weather. They are highly popular with backpapers and within the military.
Professional backpackers (operating in the wilderness) have however now turned away from the regular zippo lighter in favor of butane lighters (eg Windmill Typhoon, Silva Storm, Brunton Helios,...) heavy-duty matches (eg NATO Approved Wind & Waterproof Matches), and flint rods (eg Doan Magnesium Fire Starting Tool, WSI Hot Spark, Swedish FireSteel Mini, WSI Flint and Steel, Strike Force, Ultimate Survival, ... ...).

Zippo lighter is my favorite lighter. I really appreciate its quality.
